Greenhorn Thoughts on Finding Advisors and Mentors

No man is an island, and neither is a startup. If you've taken up the task of starting up a company, then you should absolutely be seeking out others to solicit help and feedback from.  Often this leads to the recruitment of advisors and thus the formation of an advisory board and the building of that infamous page on every website with famous or important people from your industry listed as company advisors.

When you're first starting out, thinking about how you're going to get advisors can be intimidating and overwhelming.  It's always better when you Keep It Simple, so I'd like to show you why this isn't as hard as you think and you should think broader than a few advisors.

This week we are talking to Susan Hunt Stevens, Founder & CEO of Practically Green, a company that helps you live healthier and greener.

You are who you surround yourself with. Who surrounds your startup?

Much has been said and written on the topic that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with (there's over 20 million results on that Google search!?!).  When thinking about startups, that lesson must not be forgotten and may explain why some startups stall and fail.  Sometimes, getting caught up in all the startup noise you may forget this, so I'd like to explore this concept.

Observations of the New York Startup Scene

Last weekend, I participated in the Lean Startup Machine, New York edition, as a mentor.  It represented the completion of a long overdue goal of making a trip down to NYC to check out their startup scene.  While I was only there for a brief, 48-hour stint, I made the most of it and learned a lot about their startup scene through the many conversations I had over the weekend.  I'd like to share some of the things I learned about the NY community.
