Description:

Most public speaking courses don't work because they focus on techniques instead of integration. The theory goes that if you focus on and improve 10 different aspects of your speaking, you will magically become a great public speaker. The reason these courses don't work is because the best speakers use a different approach to get good.

Instead of taking courses, they spend a lot of time watching great speakers and emulating them. Often they do this without even noticing what they are doing. As the saying goes, you become the 5 people you spend the most time around. It can take years to get good with this approach because the learning happens slowly over weeks, months and years.

I take a different approach. There are 3 steps:

  1. Pick 1 great public speaker who is as close as possible to your style

  2. Memorize a short 1-3 minute section of a video of them speaking

  3. Videotape yourself giving the speech and focus on copying their

    1. Ways of talking (volume, tempo, etc)

    2. Ways of moving

Once you do this, you will have adopted your favorite speakers non verbal style as your own. Instead of toiling away to get to a high level of skill, you can quickly leapfrog to a high level. Now that you have a solid foundation, you can start to mix in your own personal style as well as incorporating bits and pieces from other speakers.

NOTE: It's not about becoming a carbon copy of another person, it is about adding their skills to your repertoire as quickly as possible.  You can add the skills you want from multiple role models until you create your own unique style.
